Manitoba Magazine Publisher's Association

MMPA History

Established as a non profit organization in 1988, the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association has taken root as an effective voice of Manitoba magazine publishers over the last six years. The MMPA was established by a group of Winnipeg-based magazine publishers involved in the non-profit arts, literary, and social criticism sector. It became quickly evident that the problems and challenges of publishing magazines are universal, and so the organization has reached out to privately-owned magazines in recent years in order to better achieve its aim of representing all magazine publishers.

The MMPA has successfully represented the interests of Manitoba magazines at a number of federal meetings, including consultations establishing the Canada Magazine Fund; representing small magazine publishers on the federal department of Culture and Heritage Small Magazine Advisory Committee (2002-2004) and has mounted efforts on behalf of Manitoba magazines to retain the Publication Assistance Program through Canada Post.

The MMPA receives a modest annual operating grant Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Tourism, as well as project grants through the Canada Magazine Fund, the Canada Council for the Arts and, on occasion, from other granting agencies such as Western Diversification Fund, Manitoba Education and Training and the Manitoba Arts Council.

The MMPA works on a collaborative basis with organizations including Magazines Canada, the British Columbia Association of Magazine Publishers (BCAMP) and the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA).
